cereal selection Giving up cerealI gave up cereal at the beginning of the month.

Let me be clear, this was not easy. I love cereal with all of my body.
Also, this action rendered my Alternative Milk Taste Test pointless.

I used to look forward to waking up and being able to eat some sort of delicious Trader Joe’s cereal or granola. Anything from Envirokidz Gorilla Munch to TJ’s Granny Smith Apple Granola.

The sad part is, at times on the weekends, my wife will want to go by our local Einstein Bros for a quick bagel, but I still dream of cereal while eating my breakfast sandwich. (I go to breakfast for the company, not for the food.)

Why did I decide to give up cereal?

One of my sisters sent me this article: Dirty Secrets of the Food Processing Industry

If you are trying to eat healthy, it is a good read, but also very depressing.
Concerning cereal, it claims that all cereal is bad because of how it is made, extrusion:

It destroys the fatty acids; it even destroys the chemical vitamins that are added at the end. The amino acids are rendered very toxic by this process. The amino acid lysine, a crucial nutrient, is especially denatured by extrusion. This is how all the boxed cereals are made, even the ones sold in the health food stores. They are all made in the same way and mostly in the same factories. All dry cereals that come in boxes are extruded cereals.

So, all of my scrumptious cereals contain very little nutritional value and are also slightly toxic?

I think I’ve actually lost weight because of my anti-cereal lifestyle. I’m also a little less happy every morning.

I’ll get over it eventually….
